The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about the use of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in the United States.
A total of more than 2,500 men have been diagnosed with a condition that is thought to be linked to the drug and could lead to serious complications, including the development of a stroke.

“The use of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in the United States is a serious health risk and it is imperative that physicians consult with patients before prescribing the drug,” the agency stated.

“Viagra has not been linked to a stroke or a heart attack, so it should not be prescribed to men who are experiencing a heart attack,” said Dr John Abramson, a urologist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, who has treated patients with Viagra.
The FDA issued the first clinical trial comparing the drug with Viagra in men with erectile dysfunction.
The study involved 52 men with erectile dysfunction and a history of hypertension. Viagra patients taking the drug had a lower risk of a stroke compared with those taking a placebo. Viagra patients taking the drug had a lower risk of a heart attack, stroke, or a heart failure compared with those on a placebo.
A total of 790 patients were treated with the drug, and 152 patients were on Viagra.
A separate FDA analysis of the study found a higher risk of developing a stroke in the Viagra patients.
However, the FDA has not yet issued a warning about the use of the drug in patients.
In a press release, the agency said it has taken further steps to ensure that patients who are taking the drug are not taking nitrates.
“While Viagra has not been linked to a stroke or heart attack, we are aware that there have been cases of patients using Viagra as part of their treatment for heart disease. Patients should be alert for the potential risk of stroke, and they should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain or shortness of breath. We strongly advise patients not to take Viagra if they are taking nitrates for heart disease or if they are taking alpha-blockers for prostate cancer,” said the release.

The FDA also said it was concerned about the potential for the drug to cause an allergic reaction to nitrates.
“While we do not know if Viagra may cause an allergic reaction to nitrates, we are concerned about the possible risk for the drug to cause an allergic reaction,” the agency stated.
